This month NYCVOAD is featuring New York Cares, which has been a longstanding NYCVOAD member.
New York Cares was founded in 1987 by a group of friends who wanted to make a difference in our city. Thirty years later and New York Cares still envisions a city where all people volunteer and have an equal opportunity to improve their lives. As the largest volunteer network in the city, nearly 65,000 caring New Yorkers made the city a better place by volunteering on New York Cares programs at 1,275 nonprofits, schools and government agencies in the last year – improving education, meeting immediate needs such as food and shelter, and revitalizing public spaces. New York Cares achieves these goals by mobilizing caring New Yorkers into volunteer service and building a response that is right for the community.
New York Cares also has a long history of providing response and recovery services to those affected by disaster. Designated by NYCEM as the lead nonprofit for mobilizing volunteers in case of citywide emergencies, New York Cares responded in 2012 to the overwhelming need after Hurricane Sandy. From the day after Sandy through the end of June 2014, New York Cares filled 22,000 volunteer slots on 1,640 relief projects in impacted areas.
